CLUSTER FLIES

Cluster flies breed in manure and usually in the fall get into your attic, to spend the winter in a state of dormancy. On warm days they are aroused and move around looking for food, sometimes finding their way down onto the living quarters of your home. Sometimes they stay under the siding on your home, finding ways into the walls and up to the attic or into the house. Once they have established themselves in your residence, they return every fall. The best way I know of to eliminate these pests in to use a good fly bait in the attic throughout the year and in the spring summer and fall, around the outside of the house and out buildings. I like a product called "Golden Malrin" that you can buy at most Agway stores. Since you can't buy any kind of bait holders for this stuff, I made my own using 2 liter soda bottles. Just cut 4 holes equally spaced around the bottle approximately 6 inches up from the bottom. The holes should be as big as you can make them.  If you prefer a smaller bait station, use the 16 oz size soda bottle.  In the spring, I fill the bait holders, up to the holes you cut, and keep them filled all summer then come fall, I see very few flies around or in the house. Keep the 2 bait stations in the attic filled all year round. Depending on the number of farms and the amount of flies in your area, it could take several years to solve your problem.
