MOLES

The moles are digging tunnels in your yard, looking for grubs that are eating the roots of the grass in the yard. The grubs are the larvae of several kinds of beetles that lay eggs in and on the soil, such as the Japanese.   When the weather isn't cold enough to drive the grubs deeper into the soil, they remain just under the surface, eating the grass roots. When it's cold enough to drive the larvae deeper, you will see mounds of fine dirt several inches high and 6 to 8 inches round, these are called "pushups". Since the moles can't push the soil up to tunnel, as they do when the grubs are just under the grass, they need to get rid of the dirt removed from the tunnels....thus the pushups!

You can drive the moles away with Liquid Fence brand " Mole, Vole And Gopher Repellent".   This comes in a hose end sprayer and you just spray the area.   This product will give you complete protection for 6 weeks.  Once the mole move to a new location the usually don't return until they run out of food.   Liquid Fence products may be purchased at True Value, Ace, Hardware Hank and Trader Horn Stores.   In the event they don't have the products, just tell them to contact Liquid Fence to get some.

Of course, you can use a more permanent product, Milky Spore.  When the evening and night temperatures are above 40º, you can apply "Milky Spore". This is a bacillus, a living creature, a bacteria that will attach and kill ONLY the larvae of the beetles. It doesn't do anything to the adult beetles. It's harmless to us and our children and pets. And the best part, is that is is effective for up to 20 years!

If moles are your problem, these two products will solve the problem. But remember, never use the "Milky Spore" if the ground is frozen.
