Slugs

Unfortunately there isn't any product on the market that works more than approximately 50 to 60 % of the time.   The standard that I set for all products that I recommend is that it works at least 80% of the time.   However, you can control slugs in several ways. When working in the garden, carry a salt shaker and sprinkle salt on the slugs you see, to kill them. Course concrete sand poured over and around your plants will stop them from coming to the plants.   Be sure you get some sand down inside the center of the plants where slugs like to hide.   BONIDE has a product that works about as good as anything I've tried its a safe and biodegradable product.   The ashes from a wood burner will stop them also when used the same as the sand.   The sand should be put around the plants when they just get started in the spring, and you need only apply sand once a season.   Ashes on the other hand must be applied on a regular basis, especially after every rain.   A good dispenser for the ashes or any powder can be made from a plastic French's Mustard container.   First pop off the cone top and wash and dry the container.   Next cut off the plug the seals, the opening when you twist the cone down and discard it.   Now force the cone back on and twist it down.   If you fill this container half to three quarters full, aim the nozzle down and then aim it at the plant and squeeze the sides of the container.
